Fantastic article! You nailed it! I love that you included the community in your list of what’s great about SD. I would encourage anyone picking up the game to join the official Discord server. They have over 10k members and growing every day. The most helpful and supportive ttrpg community I’ve ever been a part of. Many GM’s even post “learn to play” games that people can sign up for free.
Completely agree, d&d has become a chaos of races and sub-races over time. With rules and dice rolls even to go to the bathroom. I find it now Completely agree, d&d has become a chaos of races and sub-races over time. With rules and dice rolls even to go to the bathroom. I find it now unmanageable.
Systems like shadowdark or Knave allow you to have the same experiences with far fewer problems.
Unmanageable is a great word. It's just "too much." Especially as people age and have different interests/hobbies. RPGs that will succeed need to have a lower barrier to entry (rules and cost-wise) and will need to encourage "flow state" experiences. Starting and stopping over rules clarifications--who has time for this?!
I love Shaowdark, wonderful manual, lots of tables, solid system, it adapts to everything. A must for fantast
I agree. It's become my default suggestion for friends who want to try "D&D."

Or at least that's how I see it.
